FELINX! provides exercises / exploitation for real Web pages in French, German
and Spanish. The source page and exercises can be displayed on the screen together,
and in most cases the exercises can be completed on-screen. After completion,
the 'Show Answers' button can be pressed, to display your work against the correct/model
answers. This can be printed out as a permanent record of the work done (as can
the source page, if you wish).
A 'Show Answers' button is provided at the bottom of each 'exercise' panel: click
on this to display the correct or model answers. If you can't see a button, or
spaces to write answers in, you need to make sure that Javascript (called
ActiveX in IE4 and Active Scripting in IE5) is enabled in your browser.
When you display the answers, an extra blank box will appear at the top of the
frame: students can use this to put their names on their work, so they can identify
their printouts when using a network printer.
Known browser bugs:
Older browsers
supplied on Research Machines equipment don't cope at all well with Javascript:
you may need an upgrade (not just for FELINE but for the web in general).
On some browsers,
if the 'Show answers' button is pressed immediately after resizing the
panels, the page doesn't appear. If this happens to you, just press your browser's
BACK button, then press the 'Show Answers' button again.)
FELINX! normally lays out the source and exercise pages alongside each other.
Unless you have a large display, it may be difficult to get everything on the
screen at once. You can vary the way the screen is divided between the source
page and the exercise page by dragging the vertical grey bar which separates them
to the left or right. Simply point at the bar with your mouse, press the left
('normal') button, and drag it.
Occasionally, a source page we've chosen will be designed so that it's impossible
for us to display it in the right hand panel. If that's the case, we'll put it
in a separate window instead: you may find it easier to resize your main browser
window so the extra window can be displayed alongside.
To display the source material, select the item you are interested in from the
one of the lists of items, and then click on the Display source text >>>
link when the exercises page is displayed. Sometimes, you may need to scroll down
the source page a short way to find the heading which matches the exercises.
Because FELINX! uses live web pages from many other sites, certain pages occasionally
become unavailable. we check all links regularly, and remove any links to pages
which can no longer be found. If you notice that a source page has disappeared,
please tell us via the Feedback
Form. Thank you.
New material is normally loaded 2 or 3 times per week during typical English term
times. Some new FELINX! feature items also appear from time to time during 'holiday'
periods.
As new FELINX!
items are added, older ones are normally discarded: typically items are retained
for about 7-8 weeks. Selected older items are retained indefinitely in the 'cat
basket'.
Most browsers will print the left and right hand panels (exercises and source
page) as separate sheets. Click on an 'inactive' part of the panel you want to
print, and then choose the 'Print Frame' (or if that's not available, 'Print')
option.
